Treating Sciatica with Chiropractic Treatment

There are approximately 3 million people who have sciatica in the United States. The medical condition includes ongoing nerve pain that  starts in the lower spine and tends to extend down the back of the leg. Sometimes the condition is so painful that standing or sitting is impossible.

The Sciatic Nerve

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It is not actually a single nerve, but is a bundle of five nerves that exit from the lumbar area of the spin and sacral area. The nerve bundle groups back together in the buttock area and forms the sciatic nerve. At this point, it travels down each leg and supports the strength and sensation of the leg. The sciatic nerve also connects to the spinal cord and major muscles in each leg. In the event of the sciatic nerve being crushed, pinched, or otherwise hindered, pain, tingling, weakness, or numbness can result.

Sciatica is Not an Actual Diagnosis

As a chiropractor in Dundalk, MD might tell you, sciatica isn’t actually a diagnosis, but rather a broad range of symptoms that can lead to the condition known as sciatic. The cause of sciatica is broad, and includes:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Herniated disc
  • Slipped disc
  • Sports injuries
  • Wear and tear on the spine
  • Spondylolisthesis

Risk Factors that May Lead to Sciatica or Sciatic Nerve Pain

Anyone can experience sciatica; however, older people or those who are sports players may have an increased risk of developing sciatica. Herniated discs are one of the most common causes of sciatica. Obesity or being overweight might also be a contributor. The same applies to people who have diabetes. This is because diabetes can cause nerve damage.

Supporting Research

Popular Spine Journal published a study in 2006 which demonstrated the ability of chiropractic care to alleviate some or all of the pain associated with sciatica. A 2010 follow up study also found that at least 60 percent of participants who were unable to find relief through other methods of treatment, found relief through chiropractic treatment.
